2008 Dragon Boat Race – Austin, TX

Brad, Mandy, Becky and I went to the Dragon Boat Races today which are also part of an Asian culture festival. We stopped by the Farmer’s Market on the way down and picked up some wonderful looking veggies for later this week. The food at the festival was pretty good, though the sticky rice was more “interesting” than good.

There were many booths for the promotion of all different sorts of Asian culture, and of course the one that caught my (and Brad’s) attention was one selling import DVDs. I ended up buying a copy of Sukiyaki Western Django which was described to me by the dealer as a Japanese spaghetti western, in English, starring Quentin Tarrantino, and directed by Takashi Miike (director of The Happiness of the Katakuris, Ichi the Killer, and The City of Lost Souls among many others). He highly recommended it and I’m looking forward to watching it.

We saw dragon dancing (click on any of the pics to go to the Flickr set and see others):

And kids dancing:

And the actual Dragon Boat Races:

Then we went down to the shops on South Congress and saw some really frightening antiques:

And had some delicious cupcakes at Hey Cupcake! (as seen on the Food Network). We also made the mistake of trying a “Double BACON Chocolate Bar” which is exactly what it sounds like…bacon covered in chocolate:
It probably wouldn’t have been too bad if the bacon had been crispy, but it wasn’t…it was chewy. So after the very tasty chocolate melted away, you were left with a mouth full of chewy, chocolaty, bacon-y yuck. Not good. Here’s Brad trying it:

And I took my turn:

Fun day!

  • I am not sure that I can completely understand your comments. Would you be so kind as to expand on your reasoning a little more before I comment.

I don’t know what your comment is commenting on. If it’s about the chocolate covered bacon, my problem with it was mostly the chewy-ness of the bacon itself. I think if it was crispy, it would have been an interesting combination. As it was, it didn’t work for me. If you’re commenting on something else, then you’ll have to be more specific. Thanks!
